Kirikiriroa Marae is an urban marae, which was established in 1984. It was founded in the spirit and belief that Maori living in urban settings need new ways to connect with and create their community. Over the years many Maori, through urbanisation, have drifted from their own connections to their whanau, hapu and iwi.  Kirikiriroa Marae was established to meet this need in an urban context as a turangawaewae, or place to stand regardless of place of origin, ethnicity, gender, religious or spiritual belief.  Since its inception, the Marae has supported a number of initiatives for the benefit of children, youth, elderly and whanau/families.

This vision is an evolving vision, designed to unfold with the people of the marae and the larger Waikato/Tainui community.  Over the years, a number of projects and developments have emerged out of need and motivation.  While originally responding to local need, it was subsequently spearheaded a number of innovative projects, both nationally and internationally.
